I can't believe some of the great French-Canadians Directors are not mentioned here.
Tell me it's just a mishap!
How can you think of Canadian cinema without mentioning Denis Arcand with " the Decline of The American Empire", " Barbarian Invasions" and "The Age of Innocence AKA Days of Darkness",
and Jean-Marc Lepage with, "La face Cachee de la lune"
,Jean-Marc Lavallee with "C.R.A.Z.Y", or Erik Canuel's "Bon Cop Bad Cop".
??!
Canadian Film lover too!!

Thom Fitzgerald Returns to Boston

Thom Fitzgerald's latest work, 3 NEEDLES, finally gets a release here in the States to coincide with World AIDS Day. Thom will return to the Brattle Theatre on December 2 to do a Q&A at the 5 p.m. screening of his films, followed by a reception for ticketholders. The screening is a benefit for Boston Living Center, a local non-profit AIDS organization.

Our film society honored Thom back in 2004 at the Brattle Theatre with a special award for his creative vision as a director. He was a fascinating guest and I look forward to hearing from him again. Unfortunately, I was a little disappointed when I saw 3 NEEDLES last year at the Toronto International Film Festival. However I hear the film has been reedited and some new footage added since its premiere screening, so I'm interested to check it out again.

Cheers,

Don McKellar Nominated for a Tony Award

So this is a little late, but congratulations to Canadian filmmaker/actor/celebrity Don McKellar on the success of "The Drowsy Chaperone!" McKellar co-wrote the musical with fellow Canadian Bob Martin (who also stars). "Chaperone" has received 13 Tony Award nominations, and is considered a front-runner to win in the Best Musical category. Don has already won a Drama Desk Award for his work on this project.

I'm hoping to see it later this summer, and good friends of mine will be seeing it in a couple of weeks. Nice to see Don branching out so successfully.

Favorite Canadian Filmmakers

Hoping to get some of you to post something here! Surely you have some favorite Canadian filmmakers. Whose films do you never miss? Who is the first filmmaker that comes to mind when you think Canadian Film?

While I love a lot of Canadian filmmaker, Atom Egoyan tops my list. He actually is my favorite filmmaker globally, so that's an easy one.

Anyone?

So, how about that talented Canadian actress, Ellen Page (WILBY WONDERFUL, MARION BRIDGE) nabbing the role of Kitty Pryde in X-Men 3! Good for her. With the upcoming release of the controversial film HARD CANDY, followed by X3, Page is sure to make an big impact on audiences stateside, and possibly worldwide!

I saw this when I was 14 (at the 1995 Fort Lauderdale Film Festival) and found it beautiful and sad. Does a DVD exist? Has anyone else seen it? Its director, Jeremy Podeswa, was later responsible for 'The Five Senses.'

The Toronto International Film Festival is coming up soon (September 9 - 18) and that's a mecca of Canadian film and filmmakers. Already announced include Deepa Mehta's latest film WATER which is the Festival's Opening Night Film, Atom Egoyan's WHERE THE TRUTH LIES, and David Cronenberg's A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE.

Of course, the irony about the Toronto Film Festival is that the Canadian films are the hardest to get tickets to because they don't get wide distribution in Canada either!

Anyone here going to the festival? This will be my fifth or sixth. I try to go every year.

So Atom Egoyan's new film, WHERE THE TRUTH LIES, had its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this month, where it's frank depiction of sex has gotten lots of critics chattering. Here's a link to the Cannes site with photos form the premiere and excerpts from Egoyan's press conference. http://www.festival-cannes.fr/films/fiche_film.php?langue=6002&id_film=4282797.
